Red Wings' Svechnikov out for season after surgery

Detroit — What was looking as a potential breakthrough season has gone completely in the other direction for Evgeny Svechnikov.

The young Red Wings’ forward underwent successful surgery which included ACL reconstruction Tuesday.

Svechnikov, 21, the Wings’ 2015 first-round draft pick, is expected to miss 5-6 months — likely the remainder of the regular season.

Svechnikov suffered the injury on Sept. 29, in the Wings’ final exhibition game, a 5-1 victory over Toronto.

After an impressive training camp and exhibition season — Svechnikov scored two winning goals — he appeared in serious contention for an Opening Night roster spot.

But the injury ended those hopes, as Svechnikov was placed on non-roster injured reserve on Oct. 1 and now faces a full season of rehabilitation.

In 16 career games with the Wings, Svechnikov has two goals and two assists while averaging 9:22 of ice time per game.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Kyle Anderson.
