EMU: Creighton's recruits could play soon

Chris Creighton was looking for players who were wanted to help turn a program around.

With 25 additions to the Eastern Michigan program on National Signing Day on Wednesday, he hopes to end the program's decade-long streak of losing.

"We didn't sugarcoat anything," Creighton said of his recruiting pitch. "I'm proud of these guys. They want to be part of what we're doing here. We found our type of guys.

"(Wednesday's signings) is a close group already, communicating on social media and talking with each other. They want the challenge. ... They want to be part of what we're doing here. We found our type of guys."

Creighton, 2-10 in his first season, was looking for talent and depth.

And three local recruits could go a long way toward filling some holes.

■Hunter Andrews, a 6-foot-4, 217-pound defensive lineman from Lapeer East.

■Sam Girodot, a 6-3, 245-pound tight end from Jackson Lumen Christi. He could see playing time quickly with only one other tight end on the roster.

■Brian Alsobrooks, a 6-foot, 215-pound kicker/punter from Livonia Churchill. He also played quarterback in high school, and will get an opportunity in a variety of positions.

"All three of these guys are our kind of guys," Creighton said.

Creighton predominately redshirted last year's freshmen, but believes there are players in this freshman class who can contribute quickly.

"This class will have a chance to come in here and compete and play," Creighton said. "We'll redshirt people, but we'll infuse our team with our redshirt class from last year and this class.

"We lack depth in some areas more than others."
