Saturday's state roundup: Calvin ousted in Division III
Mount Union ended Calvin's men's basketball season with an 81-69 victory in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday at Alliance, Ohio.
Mount Union (24-6) outshot Calvin 52 percent to 41 percent and had 15 points off turnovers to Calvin's eight.
Nate Jacubec scored 19 for Mount Union and Kyle Scelza scored 16 off the bench.
Jordan Daley scored 21 and Austin Parks 17 for Calvin (22-7).
GLIAC semifinals (at Lake Superior State)
Lake Superior State 70, Saginaw Valley State 56: Tony Harris (14 points) and Devin Daly (11 points) came off the bench to lead Lake State (25-5) to the title game. Alex Williams added 11 points. Garrett Hall scored 18 and Damon Bozeman 10 for Saginaw Valley (21-9).
Ferris State 81, Walsh 65: Drew Lehman scored 21, Josh Fleming 19 and Jared Stolicker 18 for Ferris State (21-8). Jesse Hardin Jr. scored 24 for Walsh (17-10). Ferris State will face Lake State for the title at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Eastern Michigan 93, (at) Central Michigan 86: Janay Morton scored 34, Cha Sweeney 20 and Brianna Puni and Jamaica Bucknor nine each for Eastern (18-10, 11-7 MAC). The Eagles clinched the No. 6 seed for the league tournament and will host 11 seed Kent State at 5 p.m. Monday. Lorreal Jones scored 23 and Jas'Mine Bracey 17 for Central (12-17, 7-11). Central will play at Northern Illinois at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
(At) Western Michigan 50, Northern Illinois 45: Miracle Woods scored 12, Meredith Shipman nine and A.J. Johnson eight for Western (18-11, 11-7 MAC), which clinched the No. 5 seed for the conference tournament and will host Bowling Green at 5:30 p.m. Monday. Kelly Smith scored 12 for Northern Illinois (12-16, 8-10).
Women's GLIAC semifinals (at Michigan Tech)
Michigan Tech 77, Grand Valley State 66: Jillian Ritchie scored 27, Danielle Blake 25 and Kelli Guy 10 for Michigan Tech (26-2), which reached the final despite getting no points from its bench. Piper Tucker scored 13 and Kat Laprarie 10 for Grand Valley (20-8). Michigan Tech will play Ashland, an 80-64 winner over Walsh in the other semifinal, in the conference title game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
NCAA Women's Division III Tournament
(At) Calvin 91, Wisconsin-Oshkosh 71: Kayla Engelhard scored 28, Breanna Verkaik 18 and Anna Timmer 16 off the bench for Calvin (29-0), which will face DePauw Friday at a site to be determined. Taylor Schmidt scored 16 for Wisconsin-Oshkosh (23-7).
Hope 72, Wisconsin Lutheran 47: At Wheaton, Illinois, Maura McAfee scored 19, Brittany Berry 15 and Rebekah Llorens 10 for Hope (25-4), which advanced to the Sweet 16, where it will face St. Thomas (Minn.) on Friday at a site to be determined. Dallas Chladek scored 14 for Wisconsin Lutheran (25-5).
