A University of Notre Dame student and member of the fencing team who was to graduate Sunday died early Saturday after falling from the roof of the Joyce Center.
William Meckling, 21, was a mechanical engineering major from Centennial, Colorado.
The Joyce Center is a multi-purpose arena that is home to the Notre Dame basketball and volleyball teams.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Billy's family and friends after this terrible tragedy," said Notre Dame president Rev. John Jenkins. "It is a profound sadness for all of us, on this graduation weekend, to lose someone so young and brimming with promise."
Notre Dame police said Meckling and other students gained access to the roof at a low point from outside the building. The roof was wet from precipitation, police said. The other students with Meckling did not suffer injuries.
