MSU moves up to No. 6 in AP Top 25; UM stays at No. 15

Michigan State is finally heading in the right direction again — at least in the Associated Press poll.

After peaking at the No. 2 spot in the AP Top 25, Michigan State (8-0) slid in back-to-back weeks and held steady at No. 7 last week after a stunning 27-23 victory over then-No. 12 Michigan. The Spartans moved up a spot to No. 6 this week, after a pair of Top 10 teams fell and their own 52-26 victory over Indiana, but actually dropped one spot to No. 5 in the coaches poll.

Michigan (5-2), which was idle this weekend, held steady at No. 15 in the AP and No. 17 in the coaches poll.

Top-ranked Ohio State has picked up 11 first-place votes following Utah’s first loss of the season.

The Buckeyes (8-0) have been No. 1 all season, but had been losing first-place votes in recent weeks. This week, Ohio State had 39 first-place votes in the AP poll after routing Rutgers.

Baylor, Clemson, LSU and TCU — the rest of the top 5 — also received first-place votes, as did No. 7 Alabama.

Utah had its highest regular-season ranking after climbing to No. 3 last week, but dropped 10 spots after losing to unranked Southern California.

Florida State also dropped after its first loss of the season, falling eight places to No. 17. The Seminoles lost 22-16 to Georgia Tech on a blocked field goal that was returned for a touchdown on the game’s final play.
