MSU ninth, UM 14th in AP poll

Michigan State improved five spots, to ninth, in both the Associated Press college football poll and the coaches' poll; both were released Sunday.

Michigan moved up one spot, to 14th, in the AP poll, and the Wolverines improved two places, to 13th, in the coaches' poll.

The Spartans (9-1 overall, 5-1 Big Ten) beat Maryland 24-7 on Saturday. They travel to Ohio State this Saturday (3:30 p.m., ABC).

The Wolverines (8-2, 5-1) survived, 48-41, in two overtimes at Indiana. Michigan travels to Penn State this Saturday (noon, ABC), and both UM and MSU are still in contention to win the Big Ten East Division championship.

Clemson is the new No. 1 team in the coaches' poll, replacing Ohio State, which fell to No. 2, followed by Alabama and Oklahoma State.

The Tigers kept their No. 1 ranking in the AP poll, where the top four is the same as the coaches' poll.
