MSU up to sixth in both polls; UM is 12th

The Detroit News
MSU's RJ Shelton breaks free for a run in the third quarter Saturday.

Michigan State, after its 17-14 upset win over Ohio State, has improved to No. 6 in this week's Associated Press college football poll and also in the coaches' poll.

The Spartans (10-1) conclude their season this Saturday at home against Penn State (3:30 p.m., ESPN). A win over the Nittany Lions will give the Spartans the Big Ten East Division championship and they will advance to the Big Ten championship game against Iowa.

If the Spartans lose, the Michigan-Ohio State winner will claim the East title. That game begins at noon.

MSU had been ranked No. 9 in both polls.

Michigan (9-2) moved up one spot to a tie for 12th with Stanford in the coaches' poll and improved from No. 14 to No. 12 in the AP poll.

The top five in both polls are Clemson, Alabama, Iowa, Notre Dame and Oklahoma.
