MSU jumps to No. 3 in AP hoops poll; UM drops out

Detroit News staff and wire services

The Michigan State men’s basketball team’s big victory last week over Kansas fueled a big jump in the Associated Press men’s basketball poll.

The Spartans moved up to No. 3 — vaulting 10 spots — in the new poll released Monday, on the strength of last week’s 79-73 victory over then-No. 4 Kansas in the Champions Classic in Chicago.

Michigan State (3-0) moved up to No. 4 in the coaches poll, up nine spots from last week.

Michigan State, which plays at home Monday night against Eastern Michigan, also defeated Arkansas Pine Bluff on Friday night, 92-46.

Michigan, which was No. 24 last week, dropped out of both polls after Friday night’s 86-70 loss to Xavier, which checks in at No. 23.

Kentucky is the new No. 1.

The Wildcats, who were No. 1 every week last season, moved up one spot Monday following North Carolina’s loss to Northern Iowa. Kentucky (4-0) beat then-No. 5 Duke in the Champions Classic last week and the Wildcats received 59 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel.

Maryland (3-0) moved up one spot to second and received the other six first-place votes.

Michigan State is followed in the top 10 by Iowa State, Kansas, Duke, Oklahoma, Villanova, North Carolina and Gonzaga.
