Grand Valley State advances to D-II semifinals after win

Freshman running back Marty Carter ran for 231 yards, including  a touchdown, and passed for another score as visiting Grand Valley State defeated Colorado State-Pueblo, 31-7, Saturday, advancing to the Division II football semifinals.

Grand Valley State (12-2) plays Shepherd (W.V) at a time to be determined. It marks the second time in three seasons Grand Valley has advanced to the DII semifinals.

Carter's 19-yard scoring dash highlighted a 21-point first quarter for Grand Valley, which included a 65-yard TD catch by Matt Williams and a 7-yard scoring run by Kirk Spencer.

Carter connected with tight end Nick Keizer for a 22-yard scoring play in the second quarter to put Grand Valley up 28-7. Joel Schipper added a 26-yard field goal with 19 seconds left in the first half.

Quarterback Bart Williams finished  12-of-17 for 187 yards, including a TD.

A.J. Thompson scored on a 5-yard pass catch in the first quarter for Colorado State-Pueblo (12-2).
