MSU moves up to No. 3 in AP poll; UM is No. 17

The Detroit News

Michigan State’s victory in the Big Ten Championship game Saturday night vaulted the Spartans into the top four in the final regular-season rankings in the Associated Press and coaches polls, released Sunday.

Michigan State (12-1), which is the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff after its 16-13 victory over Iowa, is No. 3 in the Associated Press poll — up two spots — and No. 4 in the coaches poll, bumping up one spot.

Michigan State will play Alabama at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 in the Cotton Bowl, with the winner taking on the winner of the Orange Bowl between No. 1 seed Clemson and No. 4 seed Oklahoma.

Michigan (9-3), which was idle this weekend, moved up two spots to No. 17 in both polls.

No. 1 Clemson received 59 first-place votes in the AP poll, No. 2 Alabama got nine, and Michigan State one from media panel.

Oklahoma slipped one spot to No. 4. Stanford moved up two spots to No. 5 after winning the Pac-12 title and Iowa dropped two spots to sixth after its first loss of the season.

Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida State and North Carolina round out the top 10.
