Hope men, Calvin women prevail in The Rivalry

The Rivalry was a split decision for Hope and Calvin on Saturday.

Hope men’s team defeated Calvin, 65-61, for its 100th victory against its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association foe. The win also clinched the MIAA title for the sixth-ranked Flying Dutchmen.

Both games were at Calvin in Grand Rapids.

Brock Benson and Harrison Blackledge each had 11 points for Hope (23-2, 13-1 MIAA).  Jordan Daley had 20 points to lead Calvin (10-15, 5-9).

In the women’s tilt, Calvin upset third-ranked Hope, 87-77, handing the Dutch their first loss of the season. Calvin leads the all-time series 70-45.

Anna Timmer had 18 points to lead the Knights (20-5, 14-22 MIAA), who saw six players in double figures scoring. Tiffany Karger scored 16 and Lauren Goldthorpe added 13 with both coming off the bench. Kally Verkaik and Bre Luurtsema each scored 11 and Abby Springer had 10.

Angelique Gaddy had 22 points while Maura McAfee had 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Hope (24-1, 15-1).
