State roundup: Ferris State men earn trip to GLIAC final

Drew Cushingberry scored 14 points while James Chappell and Quentin Ruff each added 11 for No. 6 seed Ferris State, which defeated host and No. 2 seed Ashland, 67-52, Saturday in the GLIAC men’s basketball semifinals.

Ferris State (21-9) advances to the final, where it will play No. 8 Walsh (15-12) at 4 p.m. Sunday at Ashland University.

Adrian Cook scored 19 to lead Ashland  (25-5).

Walsh 98, Hillsdale 69: The tandem of Zac Carter (28) and Trey Fletcher (25) combined for 53 points as No. 8 seed Walsh overwhelmed No. 5 seed Hillsdale in the GLIAC men’s semifinal at Ashland University. Kyle Cooper scored 21 and Zach Miller added 11 for Hillsdale (18-9).

GLIAC women

Grand Valley State 76, Saginaw Valley 51: Taylor Parmley (15) and Sarah Cullip (14) combined for 29 points off the bench as No. 6 seed Grand Valley State (21-8) advanced to play No. 1 seed Ashland (29-1) at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the GLIAC women’s tournament title game. Taylor Lutz had 12 points and Bailey Cairnduffy added 10 for Grand Valley. Halee Nieman and Katelyn Carriere each had 10 points for Saginaw Valley (21-7).

Division III men

Alma 90, (at) John Carroll 83: Jason Beckman scored 23 off the bench to lead five players in double figures as Alma upset fifth-ranked John Carroll to advance. Alma (23-6) will play St. Norbert (25-2) on Friday at a yet-to-be determined site. Scott Nikodemski scored 17, Doug Bradfield added 15 while DJ Beckman and Trevor Gernaat each had 10 for Alma. Antonio Vuyancih scored 21 to lead John Carroll (25-4).

(At) Augustana (Ill.) 96, Hope 80: Hunter Hill and Griffin Pils each scored 24 and Ben Ryan added 10 as Augustana (28-1)  shot 61 percent (28-of-46) from the field.  Dante Hawkins’ 20 points led five players in double figures for Hope (24-4). Cody Stuive scored 16 off the bench while Ben Gardner added 15, Chad Carlson 14 and Brock Benson 12  for the Flying Dutchmen.
