University of Detroit men's basketball players Paris Bass and Jalen Gibson will not be returning to the team next season, the school announced Tuesday.

Both are free to seek other playing opportunities, the school said. Bass was the team's leading scorer, averaging 18.4 points. Gibson played in five games last season.

"At Detroit Mercy, we relentlessly strive to develop our athletes as 'students first' said head coach Bacari Alexander in a written statement. "Within that framework of the student-athlete's welfare, our mission and vision, we are confident that this approach will assist us in building and sustaining our culture in the future. Both Paris and Jalen are fine young men who come from terrific hard working families and we wish them well in their future."

The university considers the matter closed and said there would be no further comment.

Paris Bass was the Horizon League freshman of the year in 2015 and first team All-Horizon League in 2016 but was dismissed from the team by new Titans coach Bacari Alexander.
