State football: Ferris State cruises in first-round game
Trevor Bermingham carried 26 times for 126 yards and five touchdowns, and completed eight of 10 passes for another 126 yards and one TD as Ferris State trounced Midwestern State, 65-34, Saturday in a Division II first-round playoff game at Big Rapids.
Midwestern State (8-3) led 20-10 after Quade Coward threw a 27-yard pass to Breion Evans in the first minute of the second half, but Ferris State (10-2) scored the next 27 points to lead 37-20 early in the third quarter.
All 27 points in the Ferris run were on touchdown runs by Bermingham (1, 12, 2 and 15 yards).
Ferris went on to lead 51-27 by the end of the third quarter, then added two scores on interception returns for touchdowns by Tavierre Thomas (51 yards) and Jevonte Alexander (35 yards) in the fourth quarter.
Ferris State will play Colorado School of Mines (10-2) next Saturday in a second-round game.
Division III
(At) John Carroll 37, Olivet 12: John Carroll (10-1) rolled out to a 25-6 halftime lead and coasted home in the second half. Anthony Moeglin completed 21 of 34 passes for 262 yards and four touchdowns for John Carroll. Lane Porter completed 15 of 23 passes for for 140 yards for Olivet (9-2), but the Comets mustered just 188 yards in total offense.
