Northern Michigan player dies after workout
Northern Michigan offensive lineman Anthony Herbert, 20, was found dead in his dorm Tuesday following a morning workout, the school announced.
The cause of his death was unknown.
Herbert took part in a morning workout with teammates and then had breakfast before returning to his dorm room. Medical personnel were called to Herbert's room in response to a medical emergency, but they were unable to resuscitate him, ESPN reported.
The Lapeer native was Northern Michigan's starting left guard and played in every game in his freshman season. The Construction Management major was named to the all-GLIAC academic team this season.
"In my brief time with Anthony, I could tell that he was a great young man," Northern Michigan coach Kyle Nystrom said. "He was well respected by his coaches and teammates and was a leader on the offensive line. We are devastated by this tragedy, and we are keeping his family in our prayers."
