State roundup: Western Michigan posts second straight win

Kalamazoo  — Thomas Wilder scored 17 points and Western Michigan won back-to-back games for just the second time this season with a 76-67 victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday night.

Tucker Haymond finished with 16 points and Seth Dugan had 13 for Western Michigan (8-15, 4-7 Mid-American Conference), which has won three of four overall.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well, each finishing with just 22 field goals. But the Broncos hit eight more free throws and held a 6-5 advantage in 3-point shooting.

Eugene German led all scorers with 20 points for Northern Illinois (14-10, 6-5).

Northern Illinois stormed back from a 10-point halftime shortfall to take a 39-36 lead with 14:32 left. The Broncos quickly answered, stringing together a 9-0 stretch to regain a 45-39 advantage.

Western Michigan did not trail again; though the game remained close the rest of the way. Three free throws by Wilder and Haymond made it 73-63 in the final minute and sealed it.

(At) Miami (Ohio) 81, Central Michigan 76: Logan McLane had a career-high 29 points, Marcus Weathers scored 18, including a go-ahead 3-point play, and Miami (10-15, 3-9 Mid-American) held NCAA leading scorer Marcus Keene to a season-low 12 points.

Braylon Rayson scored 24 points for his 11th consecutive 20-point MAC game, David DiLeo added 15, and Josh Kozinski had 14 with four 3s for the Chippewas (16-9, 6-6), who made 14 of 40 from behind the arc.

Keene, who averages 30.7 points a game, scored 50 points in Central Michigan’s 101-92 win over the RedHawks on January 21, becoming the first Division I player since 2013 to score 50.

Wayne State 70, (at) Northern Michigan 64: Marcus Moore had 19 and a career-high 17 rebounds to lead visiting Wayne State. Chuck Key scored 17 and Ronald Booth added 16 for the Warriors (14-8, 11-7 GLIAC), who trailed 32-26 at halftime. Naba Echols had 21 points and Isaiah Johnson 18 points for Northern (7-16, 5-13).

Tinara Moore added 12 off the bench and Reyna Frost finished with 10. Breanna Mobley had a game-high 27 points for Western (14-8, 5-6).

(At) Detroit Mercy 71, Oakland 61: Brianne Cohen scored 24 and Rosanna Reynolds added 17 and Anja Marinkovic 11 for the Titans (14-10, 10-3 Horizon), who took the regular season series (2-0) from their rival. Leah Somerfield had 17 points to lead Oakland (13-11, 7-6).

(At) Miami 72, Eastern Michigan 63: Kendall McCoy (14) and Savannah Kluesner (13) teamed up for 27 points in helping hand the Eagles (5-11, 0-4 MAC) their fourth straight loss and 11th defeat in last 12 games. Sheyna Deans had 21 points and Phillis Webb 17 for Eastern. Lauren Dickerson and Kayla Brown each had 11 for Miami (7-10, 1-3).
