Toledo tabbed to win MAC championship by media
Canton, Ohio – Toledo was picked to win the Mid-American Conference West Division and to win the championship game in a poll released on MAC Media Day Wednesday morning at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Toledo received 142 points, including 22 first-place votes, to top the West teams, followed by defending MAC champion Western Michigan (107, one first-place vote), Northern Illinois (89, one), Eastern Michigan (74), Central Michigan (62) and Ball State (30).
Ohio (131, 11) was picked to win the East by a narrow margin over Miami (129, 12), followed by Bowling Green (88, 1), Akron (79), Buffalo (41) and Kent State (36).
Western Michigan had an unbeaten regular season, defeating Ohio in the MAC championship game at Ford Field before losing to Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl.
The Broncos have beaten Toledo the last two years after losing to the Rockets in overtime at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo in 2014.
Toledo received 21 votes to win the MAC championship game with Western Michigan, Bowling Green and Miami each receiving one vote.
The season kicks off August 31 with Central Michigan hosting Rhode Island.
