There’s no place like home for the holidays.
And the Oakland men’s basketball team will be staying in Rochester for Thanksgiving Day weekend, hosting a tournament.
Joining Oakland for the hoops showcase will be James Madison from the Colonial Athletic Conference, old rival Oral Roberts from the Summit League and Northern Illinois from the Mid-American Conference.
Oakland last hosted a tournament over Thanksgiving Day weekend in 2014.
Oakland was 19-14 this season, which ended in the semifinals of the Horizon League tournament at Little Caesars Arena with a 44-43 loss to Cleveland State. Despite being invited to multiple second-tier postseason tournaments, including the CBI and CollegeInsider.com, Oakland declined because of an injury-depleted roster and budget considerations.
This past season, James Madison was 10-22, Oral Roberts 11-21 and Northern Illinois 13-19.
Oakland has never played James Madison before; it is 0-2 all-time against Northern Illinois; and 18-14 all-time against Oral Roberts.
The Golden Grizzlies’ complete nonconference schedule for 2018-19 still is being pieced together, though it is known they play at Michigan State in the last year of a multi-year contract that might not be renewed beyond 2018 with the Big Ten expanding to a 20-game conference schedule.
