Michigan vaulted into the top 10 of this week’s Associated Press Top 25 college basketball poll, leading a big week for the Big Ten.

The Wolverines (5-0) jumped nine spots to No. 9, thanks to a trio of convincing victories, including a 73-46 thumping of defending champion Villanova in a title-game rematch and a Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament title.

Michigan defeated Villanova, George Washington and Providence by an average of 23 points.

Michigan State (3-1) held steady at No. 11, behind victories against overmatched opponents in Louisiana-Monroe and Tennessee Tech, the latter of which resulted in a tie for the largest margin of victory in program history.

Three more Big Ten teams joined the Top 25 mix this week, with Iowa checking in at No. 20, and No. 23 Ohio State and No. 25 Wisconsin sandwiched around Purdue, which dropped a spot to No. 24.

While top-ranked Duke and No. 2 Kansas did little to hurt their status as early national title contenders, Villanova and Syracuse slid all the way out of the Top 25 on Monday.

The Wildcats not only lost a rematch of last year’s championship game with Michigan, it lost in overtime to Furman on Saturday to give coach Jay Wright’s team back-to-back losses for the first time in five years.

The Wildcats had risen to No. 8 last week. They were among those receiving votes this week.

The top five remained unchanged with Duke remained the clear No. 1, receiving 53 of 63 first-place votes after blowing out Eastern Michigan. Kansas was second with seven first-place votes after wins over Vermont and Louisiana-Lafayette, followed by Gonzaga, Virginia and Tennessee.
