Saturday's state college basketball: Oakland improves to 7-2, routs IUPUI by 33 points

Indianapolis — Jalen Moore scored 15 points in shooting 10-for-10 from the foul line and Oakland dismantled IUPUI 78-45 on Saturday.

Jamal Cain, Micah Parrish and Trey Townsend each scored 14 points for the Grizzlies (7-2, 2-0 Horizon League) which now have won five straight.

Parrish made a 3-pointer, Townsend threw down a dunk to start a 13-2 run for Oakland in a little more than three-and-a-half minutes in the first half and the Grizzlies led the rest of the way.

B.J. Maxwell scored 19 points for the Jaguars (1-7, 0-2) which have lost back-to-back contests and four of their last five.

(At) GVSU 70, Wayne State 63: After taking a 10-point 33-23 lead into halfime, Wayne State went cold in the second half and lost 70-63 at Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon. 

Darian Owens-White was the top scorer and led the Warriors (1-4, 0-2 GLIAC) with 22 points, while Avery Lewis chipped in 19 points. 

Jordan Harris finished with 21 points to lead the Lakers (6-1, 1-1 GLIAC), while Van Tubbergen had 14 points with a team-high 13 rebounds. 

Unable to find a basket in the first half shooting just 27 percent, GVSU shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away for their first win in conference play.

Saturday’s state women

IUPUI 74, Oakland 49: Kayla Luchenbach scored in double figures for the third time this season with 14, while Oliva Sims added 11 points, but a slow start doomed Oakland as they fell to IUPUI, 74-49 at home. 

Reigning Player of the Year and Preseason Player of the Year pick Macee Williams had a double-double for IUPUI, 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Oakland (3-4, 2-2 Horizon) was outrebounded 45-27, with IUPUI (4-1, 2-0 Horizon) pulling down 14 offensive rebounds and racking up 17 assists on 27 made shots.

Western Michigan 68, (at) Indiana State 67: Reilly Jacobson made a layup with 2:37 left to give Western (5-2) a 68-59 lead, which barely held up to the 8-0 lead Indiana State (3-5) closed with. Lauren Ross scored 25, Taylor Williams 18 and Jaconson 11 for Western.

No. 13 GVSU 72, Wayne State 35: Emily Spitzley led four GVSU players in double figures with a game-high 14 points, while Ellie Droste contributed 13 points, and Rylie Bisballe and Hadley Miller each added 12 points to lead the Lakers to demolish Wayne State, 72-35.

Kate Sherwood had a team-high seven points, and Tori Perez grabbed a game-best eight rebounds for the Warriors. 

Wayne State (5-2,1-1 GLIAC) was held to just 22 percent shooting from the floor on 13-of-58, while GVSU (6-1,1-1 GLIAC) connected on 48 percent (29-of-60) of its field goal attempts. 

UIC 68, Detroit Mercy 64 F/OT: Jaida McCloud led all scorers with 30 points to help Illinois-Chicago hold off Detroit Mercy, 68-64 for the overtime victory. 

Kristian Young added 11 for the Flames (2-5, 1-3 Horizon), who needed several key free throws down the stretch to seal the deal. 

Brandi Washington finished with 16 points to lead the Titans (0-8, 0-4), while Sydney Searcy added 14 for Detroit Mercy.
