Rosemont, Ill. — After an Elite Eight appearance last season, Michigan State has high expectations again.

The Spartans were picked to finish second in the official preseason Big Ten media poll, behind Wisconsin, which was a unanimous favorite. Ohio State was selected to finish third.

The Badgers’ Frank Kaminsky was a unanimous selection as Big Ten player of the year, after helping Wisconsin reach the Final Four last season. Joining him on the all-conference team are Michigan’s Caris LeVert, Yogi Ferrell (Indiana), Terran Petteway (Nebraska) and Sam Dekker (Wisconsin).

Michigan, which reached the Elite Eight last season, lost Nik Stauskas, Mitch McGary and Glenn Robinson III to the NBA. The Wolverines did not place in the Big Ten media poll, which only lists the top three teams.

LeVert and sophomores Zak Irvin and Derrick Walton Jr. lead a young UM squad that has seven freshmen on the roster and just one senior.

Michigan State’s women’s team was picked to finish second in the conference behind Maryland, which is in its first season in the Big Ten after leaving the ACC.

The Spartans return sophomore guard Aerial Powers, who was picked for the coaches all-conference team.
