UM, MSU take it outdoors again at Soldier Field

So, what's going to happen when the Big Ten-leading Wolverines (15-8-0, 7-2-0) and Spartans (10-11-2, 4-3-2) continue their rivalry outdoors Saturday (8 p.m., BTN) at Soldier Field in Chicago?
Michigan and Michigan State are even at 1-1-1 in outdoor games against each other, starting with a 3-3 tie in the game at Spartan Stadium in October 2001.
One thing is certain: Michigan coach Red Berenson will be wearing a jacket, something he didn't do at Camp Randall Stadium when the Wolverines dropped a 3-2 decision to Wisconsin in February 2010.
"I'm not as dumb as I was," Berenson said. "and I'll have longjohns on for sure."
Berenson enjoys the outdoor games, if not the climate.
"All of these (outdoor) games are unique," he said. "The Wisconsin game was as cold as any of the games I've been involved with. It was cold and the wind was howling. It was Saskatchewan-cold and I give the fans credit -- there was 50-some thousand."
The forecast for faceoff Saturday in Chicago is 36 degrees with a 7-mph wind.
Michigan has a strong alumni base in the Chicago area, but don't expect 50,000 to be in attendance at Soldier Field.
Miami of Ohio will play Western Michigan in the first game Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Spartans and Wolverines have split this season's series with Michigan winning a non-league game, 2-1, in the GLI title game at Joe Louis Arena and the Spartans avenging the loss last Friday at JLA, 2-1, with MSU goaltender Jake Hildebrand turning aside 29 shots.
