Sophomore Miles Bridges had a big hand in a pair of victories last week for the Michigan State men’s basketball team. He received a big honor, as a result.

Bridges earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors, averaging 22.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in victories over Iowa and Purdue. He hit the winning 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds remaining to clinch a 68-65 victory over the Boilermakers on Saturday, a victory that helped carry the Spartans to the No. 2 spot in the new Associated Press Top 25 poll, and No. 1 in the coaches poll.

It is Bridges’ second Big Ten Player of the Week honor this season.

Bridges scored 25 in a 96-93 victory at Iowa, then added 20 in the victory over Purdue. Bridges has reached at least 20 points in 10 games this season.

Illinois guard Trent Frazier was the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

Minnesota’s Destiny Pitts, a former Detroit Country Day star, was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week in women’s basketball after averaging 17.5 points and seven rebounds in a pair of victories.

It’s the sixth Big Ten weekly freshman honor for Pitts, who has made an immediate impact for the Golden Gophers.

She scored 18 — 13 coming in the first quarter — in a victory over Purdue, and added 17 in a victory Sunday over Penn State.
