Jonathan Taylor, who set career highs in rushing attempts (33) and yards (253) in Wisconsin’s win over New Mexico, was named Big Ten offensive player of the week on Monday.

Taylor, a sophomore, topped the 200-yard mark for the fourth time in his 16-game Wisconsin career.

This is the third time Taylor has been named Big Ten offensive player of the week.

Other weekly Big Ten winners:

Co-defense: Iowa DE A.J. Epenesa, who had five tackles and two sacks, both career highs, in the Hawkeyes’ win over Iowa State.

Co-defense: Minnesota DB Antoine Winfield Jr., who clinched the Gophers’ win over Fresno State with an interception in the end zone with 2:10 remaining.

Special teams: Minnesota K Emmit Carpenter, who had field goals of 50 and 53 yards, without a miss, in the Gophers’ triumph.

Co-freshman: Indiana RB Stevie Scott, who had 31 carries for 204 yards as the Hoosiers defeated Virginia. Scott ended up just three yards short of Anthony Thompson’s Indiana freshman rushing record for a single game, set in 1986.

Co-freshman: Ohio State QB Tate Martell, who was 10-for-10 passing, including a 51-yard TD, and added 95 yards rushing as the Buckeyes romped over Rutgers.

Personnel dept.

Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez is day-to-day because of a right knee injury and it might be close to game time Saturday until it is known if he can play against Troy.

Martinez was hurt on a short run with about 4 minutes left in the 33-28 loss to Colorado. Coach Scott Frost wouldn’t disclose details about the injury other than saying Martinez didn’t sustain ligament damage.

“We got about as good a news off the examination as we could have gotten,” Frost said. “He’s a little sore but doing a lot better today than I expected, and I don’t think it will be very long.”

... Receiver Danny Davis is been cleared to play on Saturday for No. 6 Wisconsin against BYU after the sophomore completed his two-game suspension.

Davis, who caught 26 passes last year, was one of two Wisconsin wideouts suspended before the start of the season. His roommate, junior Quintez Cephus, was suspended indefinitely and is facing felony charges of sexual assault.
