MSU’s Shilique Calhoun, Trae Waynes on Kiper’s first Big Board for 2015 NFL draft

The Detroit News

Michigan State has two players on the first 2015 NFL draft Big Board published by ESPN’s Mel Kiper – defensive end Shilique Calhoun and cornerback Trae Waynes.

Calhoun is listed as the No. 9 player on the board of 25 prospects and Waynes is listed at No. 23.

Kiper’s list includes all players that could be eligible for the draft, including third-year college players. If Calhoun and Waynes did enter the 2015 draft, they would do so with one year of college eligibility remaining.

Kiper on Calhoun: “With impressive quickness and the ability to close quickly when he creates space as a pass-rusher, Calhoun has the look of a lanky defender who would specialize in getting upfield quickly, but he also shows plenty of strength and leverage against the run. He was tremendously disruptive last season, and it'll be interesting to see how he deals with increased blocking attention in 2014.”

Kiper on Waynes: “The Michigan State coaching staff feels that Waynes has the potential to be the equal to Darqueze Dennard if he plays up to his potential, and you can see why. He's a playmaker who will jump routes and has good ball skills. He has a tendency to dive a bit near the line of scrimmage in attacking the ball-carrier, but added strength could fix that approach.”

The top three players on Kiper’s Big Board are Florida State QB Jameis Winston, Oregon QB Marcus Mariota and Texas A&M OT Cedric Ogbuehi.
