The Detroit News

Michigan State, after its 45-31 win over Purdue, remained No. 8 in this week's Associated Press college football poll.

Mississippi State, which defeated then-No. 2 Auburn, is the new No. 1 team, jumping over Florida State, which is now second.

Ole Miss, Baylor and Notre Dame round out the top five.

The Spartans (5-1) play at Indiana this Saturday (3:30 p.m., ESPN) before their annual rivalry game against Michigan on Oct. 25.
