MSU's Alashe projected to go 2nd overall in MLS draft

An mock draft has Michigan State midfielder Fatai Alashe going to New York City FC as the second player taken overall in the league's SuperDraft.

The senior defensive midfielder from Northville started in 80 matches and helped lead the Spartans to the NCAA quarterfinals the past two seasons. Alashe was recently named an All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The SuperDraft takes place Jan. 15 in Philadelphia.

Expansion New York City FC is coached by Jason Kreis and will play its home matches at Yankee Stadium this season. wrote about Alashe: "... what other team places such a premium on defensive midfielders? Answer: Any team, anywhere, that is coached by Jason Kreis. We present New York City FC, which has put together a very solid backline but still lacks someone to chase down the ball in midfield. Would it be a reach? Possibly. But how can you not think that Kreis is considering it?"

Alashe was one of 55 players invited to the MLS Combine.
