With a national championship in football go the spoils, so it comes as no surprise that Ohio State ranks first in the Big Ten in Athlon magazine's football/men's basketball coaching tandems.
But not far behind are Michigan State and Michigan at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in the rankings released Thursday.
Ohio State's combo of Urban Meyer, who has led the Buckeyes to a 38-3 record at OSU, and basketball coach Thad Matta, who has reached two Final Fours in 15 years, is a tough one to top.
Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio, whose Spartans have had 11 or more victories in four of the last five seasons, and basketball coach Tom Izzo, who has taken the program to six Final Four appearances and a national title, are No. 2.
Although Jim Harbaugh has yet to coach a football game at his alma mater, his previous success at Stanford and then with the San Francisco 49ers is enough, along with basketball coach John Beilein, whose Wolverines reached the national title game in 2013 and Elite Eight in 2014, for a third-place ranking. Wisconsin and Penn State are ranked 4 and 5, respectively.
