Spartans sporting new uniform look for this season
East Lansing — Michigan State wrapped up spring practice Thursday, and the annual Green and White game is Saturday, but the talk at Spartan Stadium revolved more on what the team will be wearing this season than what will take place on the field.
A new set of Nike uniforms were unveiled, but coach Mark Dantonio didn't address the media, and players made it clear they were talking about the spring game.
"Who should be favored Saturday?" defensive end Shilique Calhoun said. "I don't know. Come and watch and see who should have been favored. That's all I got."
There will be plenty to watch for a team coming off two straight top-five finishes in the nation, including position battles at running back and cornerback.
The focus Thursday, however, was the new look.
"It may not be as overly dramatic in terms of new," associate athletic director Paul Schager said. "But it's definitely something we're extremely excited about."
The standard home and away uniforms feature subtle changes, including a green anodized helmet.
It's the alternate third jersey that is the most significant.
It is influenced by Spartan shields, bronze sleeve caps house the Michigan State logo and pays homage to the gridiron warrior's homeland, according to a news release. The alternate jersey also features subtle bronze highlights throughout the design.
"This is where it gets interesting," Schager said. "All the bronze accents are in this one uniform. It does not have Michigan State across the front of the jersey but it is true to Michigan State. There will be no confusion as to who you're watching."
All the uniforms are meant to be interchangeable but when Michigan State would wear the alternate jerseys was the real question. Calhoun said the home opener against Oregon would be a good time to unveil them but emphasized it's up to Dantonio.
"I told him if he wanted me to stay (and not leave for the NFL), these had to be our Oregon uniforms," Calhoun joked. "That's up to the head ball coach. It will be brought up and he will value our opinion, but ultimately he is the head man.
