It’s a quirk in the scheduling process, but Michigan State and Michigan will meet just once this upcoming basketball season.

Michigan State will travel to the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor on Feb. 6 in the only meeting between the rivals. It is the first time since 2009 the teams have been scheduled to play just once.

The entire Big Ten Conference schedule was released on Thursday and Michigan State will be tested right out of the gate with two straight road games, beginning Dec. 29 at Iowa before heading to Minnesota on Jan. 2.

Michigan State, which lost to Wisconsin in the conference tournament title game last year before reaching the Final Four, opens its home conference schedule on Jan. 7 against Illinois but three of its first five games come away from Breslin Center. The Spartans travel to Purdue on Feb. 9, the first chance to face one-time commitment Caleb Swanigan, and they close the regular season at home against Ohio State on March 5 or 6.

Michigan opens the season Dec. 30 at Illinois and its Jan. 30 road game against Penn State will be played at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Wolverines close the season March 5 at home against Iowa.

Thomas named director

Former Michigan State player David Thomas was named the team’s director of basketball operations on Thursday, replacing Kevin Pauga, who has taken a position as an assistant athletic director.

Thomas, who played for coach Tom Izzo’s 2000 national championship team, was the director of operations for the women’s team. He has been replaced by Alysiah Bond, who played in the NCAA Final Four at Ohio State and most recently was an assistant coach at Wisconsin from 2011-15.
