CBS Sports: MSU hoops looks good for next 5 years

Michigan State is coming off a Final Four appearance, but the best might be yet to come for the Spartans, according to CBS Sports.

The Spartans rank No. 9 in CBS Sports’ list of 15 men’s basketball programs with the best chance of success over the next five years.

Duke, which ousted Michigan State in last season’s national semifinal, is No. 1 on the list with Michigan State the highest of three Big Ten teams listed. Ohio State is No. 10, and Maryland is No. 12.

Michigan is not ranked.

Michigan State has made 18 straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament, the last four producing Sweet Sixteen appearances, at the minimum.

“Michigan State’s ranking on this list is rooted in the same things that Louisville’s ranking (No. 7) on this list is rooted in, i.e., the combination of a top-shelf coach working at a top-shelf program,” CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish wrote. “The next time Tom Izzo has a bad team will be the first time in roughly 20 years. He’s just about as reliable as they come.”

Parrish said the rankings are the result of trying to size up the current coaching situation, the young player who are currently enrolled, and the shape of each team’s recruiting.
