Michigan State redshirt freshman Kenny Goins will miss about six weeks following surgery to repair a sports hernia, the school said in a release Wednesday.

The 6-foot-6, 225-pound Goins was a walk-on last season after starring at Warren Mott, where he averaged 21.1 points, 14.8 rebounds and 4.8 blocks as a senior, but earned a scholarship in the offseason.

Michigan State opens its regular-season schedule Nov. 13 against Florida Atlantic.
