Charboneau's AP vote: MSU No. 8 as playoff race tightens

Matt Charboneau
The Detroit News
This pass Saturday from Connor Cook is just out of the reach of Macgarret Kings Jr.

College football never fails to deliver on the drama, and this week was no exception. As teams continue to jockey for position in a quest for the playoffs, a few more contenders fell off the cliff while others keep plugging away.

I'm not making any changes in my top three as Ohio State, Clemson and Alabama all took care of business. Oklahoma State moved into the No. 4 spot for what would be my little playoff prediction, but there's still plenty to be decided.

As for the shuffling, Baylor took a significant drop and likely watched its playoff hopes disappear with a home loss to Oklahoma, while the Sooners go up five spots to No. 7. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are now in position to possibly decide the Big 12 in the final week of the season, though Oklahoma plays TCU next week and Oklahoma State takes on Baylor.

Iowa keeps on moving and is up to No. 6 while Michigan State benefitted from losses by Baylor and LSU to move up to No. 8.

Speaking of LSU, the Tigers came off the loss to Alabama by losing at home to Arkansas, effectively knocking them out of the playoff hunt.

And out west, it looks like the Pac-12 is finished as Stanford lost at home to Oregon and Utah lost on the road to Arizona. No team in the Pac-12 has fewer than two losses, making a playoff spot highly unlikely.

Houston had a big win over Memphis to move to 14th and keep alive hopes for a team outside of the Power Five, and Navy had another big win to move up to No. 18.
