MSU smothers Maryland on senior day

Michigan State was too much for Maryland on a damp night in East Lansing, surviving a comeback attempt to win 17-7.

MSU (8-3, 6-2) running backs had big days. LJ Scott had 29 carries for 147 yards and a touchdown, while Gerald Holmes recorded 11 carries for 64 yards, a 5.8 yard average.

Maryland (4-7, 2-6) had trouble moving the ball all game, only mustering 204 total yards, much of that coming when MSU was playing a soft prevent defense.

Maryland quarterback Max Bortenschlager rotated with Ryan Brand, but neither had much success. Bortenschlager went 13-for-25 passing for 121 yards and no touchdowns.

MSU quarterback Brian Lewerke had an ugly game, only completing two out of 14 passes, but he wasn't needed much with MSU leading virtually the entire game. He did pick up 63 yards on the ground, averaging 12.6 yards per carry.

MSU finishes up the regular season next week at Rutgers while Maryland plays at Penn State.

MSU defeats Maryland, 17-7

Holmes and Scott both ran for short gains. On third and two, Scott ran for the first down. Lewerke knelt a few time to end the game.

Maryland misses field goal, 2:31 left

Maryland started on its 13. Bortenschlager's pass went through Harrison's hands. On second and 10, Bortenschlager hit Moore for a first down. From Maryland's 33, Bortenschlager hit Moore again on the left sideline for a nine-yard pickup. Bortenschlager was sacked on second and one. From Maryland's 39, Bortenschlager hit Moore on the left sideline for a first down. Bortenschlager threw a jump ball down the left sideline and was lucky it fell incomplete. On second and 10, Bortenschlager hit Moore over the middle for a first down. From MSU's 33, Bortenschlager scrambled for six yards then hit Jacobs for a first down. From MSU's 18, Bortenschlager's pass in the end zone was knocked away by Layne. On second and 10, Bortenschlager underthrew Harrison incomplete. Bortenschlager's pass was batted down by MSU's Jones at the line. On fourth and 10, Maryland missed the 36-yard field goal. Still 17-7 MSU.

Maryland with ball, down 17-7

MSU started on its 47 after a nice return by Simmons. Scott ran to the right for a seven-yard gain. From Maryland's 46, Scott ran for the first down. Scott then ran for a short gain. On second and nine, Scott was stuffed for no gain. On third down Lewerke threw incomplete, setting up a punt with 6:27 left.

Maryland gets on the board, 17-7

Maryland started on its 41. Bortenschlager came back in and overthrew his receiver out of bounds. On second and ten Bortenschlager found Moore for a short gain. From Maryland's 46 Bortenschlager hit Moore for the first down. Bortenschlager hit Jacobs over the middle in MSU territory. After MSU was flagged for pass interference, Bortenschlager was sacked. From MSU's 12, Bortenschlager hit Jacobs on the left for a nice gain. On third and three Harrison fought through the MSU defense for a touchdown. 17-7 MSU with 9:50 left.

MSU starts fourth quarter with punt

After a Maryland punt, MSU started on its 20. London ran for a short gain. On second and nine, London was stuffed for no gain. From MSU's 21 London was stopped behind the line of scrimmage, setting up a punt.

End third quarter, MSU up 17-0

Maryland started at its 41 after a nice return by Funk. Harrison ran for one yard then another short gain. On third and six, Brand was clobbered at the line of scrimmage, ending the third quarter.

MSU hits field goal, up 17-0

On third and goal from Maryland's 11, Lewerke scrambled to his right and slid down for a loss, setting up a field goal. MSU's Coghlin pulled the kick wide but Maryland was flagged for running into the kicker. It didn't give MSU a first down, but it gave Coghlin another shot at the field goal from 27 yards that he barely converted. MSU up 17-0.

MSU threatening, up 14-0 over Maryland

Holmes ran out to midfield. On second and two, Holmes ran for the first down. At Maryland's 43, Holmes ran for a four-yard gain. On second and six, Holmes ran for a short gain. From Maryland's 37, Holmes ran for a first down. Lewerke scrambled to his right for a short gain. On second and four, Holmes ran for another first down. From Maryland's nine, Holmes ran for a short gain. MSU was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. On second and goal from Maryland's 23, Sokol took a shovel pass to the 11. Maryland took a timeout. Still 14-0 MSU.

After a questionable block in the back penalty, Maryland started inside its five. Maryland's Brand came in at quarterback, and after a short loss gained a yard. On third and 11, Harrison ran for a first down, then a short gain. On second and eight, Maryland lost three yards. Johnson ran for a short gain, and Maryland punted to MSU's 42. Still 14-0 MSU.

Scott ran for a quick first down. From MSU's 39, Scott gained one yard. On second and nine, Lewerke overthrew White down the left sideline. Lewerke then overthrew Davis, setting up a punt. Still 14-0 MSU.

Turner caught a quick pass, and the first half expired with MSU up over Maryland, 14-0.

Maryland was flagged for pass interference, giving MSU a first down with 44 seconds left in the first half. From Maryland's 46, as screen to Scott fell incomplete. On second and 10, Lewerke threw it out of bounds. Sokol couldn't reel in a pass on third down, setting up an MSU punt with 27 seconds left in the first half.

MSU took a timeout, then punted to Maryland's 19 with 1:50 left. Harrison ran for two short gains. On third and five, Bortenschlager's pass down the left sideline was dropped by Moore. Maryland punted to MSU's 39 with 53 seconds left in the first half. Still 14-0 MSU.

Scott ran for two short gains, then on third and three Scott gained two yards. Maryland then took a timeout. Still 14-0 MSU.

Maryland goes three and out again

After review, Maryland's punt was ruled a touchback, giving Maryland the ball on its 20. Johnson ran for a one-yard gain. MSU stuffed Maryland for no gain, and on third and 10, Bortenschlager hit Moore just short of a first down. Maryland's punt went out of bounds at MSU's 30.

Maryland backed up, down 14-0

Scott ran for a short gain. On second and seven, Scott burst through the line for a first down. From MSU's 46, Scott ran for seven yards then three yards for the first down. From Maryland's 44 Scott was bottled up for a loss. On second and 11, Lewerke's pass was almost intercepted by Jackson but fell incomplete. Lewerke scrambled to his right and threw it away. MSU's punt was downed inside Maryland's five. Still 14-0 MSU.

MSU's defense suffocating, gets ball back

Maryland started on its one-yard line. Harrison ran for nine yards. On second down, Harrison slipped and was brought down for a loss. From Maryland's nine, Johnson ran to the 16 for a first down. Bortenschlager was sacked by Willekes for a seven-yard loss. Johnson ran for a short gain. On third and 14, Maryland's Funk ran for four yards. Maryland's punt rolled all the way to MSU's 26. Still 14-0 MSU.

Holmes hands it right back

Holmes ran for a short gain, then rumbled his way to a first down. Holmes then ran to the one-yard line but fumbled, recovered by Maryland. MSU still leads 14-0.

Bortenschlager fumbles, MSU recovers up 14-0

Johnson returned MSU's kickoff to Maryland's 19. Harrison ran for a short gain then Moore lost yardage on a quick out. From Maryland's 20, Bortenschlager fumbled, recovered by MSU. Still 14-0 MSU.

Lewerke scores, 14-0 MSU

Lewerke broke a tackle and sprinted into the end zone for a 25-yard score. 14-0 MSU.

End first quarter, MSU up 7-0

Scott ran for a first down then was stuffed for no gain, then picked up seven yards. From MSU's 42, Scott got the first down on a four-yard run. After Chewins was flagged for a false start, Lewerke kept the ball for a first down, and Maryland was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. From Maryland's 32, MSU gained five yards on a run, ending the first quarter with MSU up 7-0.

Maryland goes three and out

Bortenschlager's pass fell incomplete. From MSU's 44, Bortenschlager threw long incomplete. On third and 10, Bortenschlager overthrew his receiver out of bounds. Maryland's punt was fair caught at MSU's 19.

Lewerke's pass was batted down by Jackson. On second and 10, Lewerke's pass fell incomplete. Lewerke's screen attempt to Holmes was dropped on third down. Hartbarger's punt was shanked, give Maryland the ball with solid field position down 7-0.

MSU's kickoff went out of bounds, starting Maryland on its 35. Harrison ran for a short gain then ran for the first down. From Maryland's 49, Johnson ran for no gain.
