Former Michigan State quarterback Messiah deWeaver announced on Monday he is transferring to a junior college.
The one-time four-star recruit who revealed after Michigan State’s Holiday Bowl victory that he intended to transfer and was given a full release by coach Mark Dantonio, posted on Twitter that he will be attending East Mississippi Community College next year.
“I want to thank all of the schools that believed in me continuing my journey academically and athletically at the highest level,” deWeaver wrote. “After much thought and prayer I have decided to attend East Mississippi Community College for the next year. I look forward to the challenges of bringing another national championship to this storied program!”
The school made famous by the Netflix series “Last Chance U” won the 2017 NJCAA national championship in December when it beat Arizona Western. It has also won the title in 2011, 2013 and 2014.
In two seasons at Michigan State, deWeaver appeared in two games and did not attempt a pass. He had four carries for a net of minus-1 yard. Playing time was likely going to be difficult to come by as sophomore Brian Lewerke established himself as Michigan State’s starter this season.
