The dead period is set to end and Michigan will begin working on finishing its 2018 recruiting class. The Wolverines signed 16 recruits during the Early Signing Period in December. In addition, Michigan has three verbal commitments – linebacker Otis Reese, quarterback Kevin Doyle and wide receiver Ronnie Bell – who did not sign yet.

These are some of Michigan’s top remaining targets as recruiting starts up again:

Nicholas Petit-Frere: The nation’s No. 3 offensive tackle according to the 247Sports Composite, Petit-Frere has already taken an official visit to Michigan. He has three officials remaining before making his decision, so do not expect an announcement to come until close to, or on, the Feb. 7 National Signing Day. Michigan also held bowl practices at his school, Berkeley Prep in Tampa, so he has had that recent experience with the Wolverines, as well. Notre Dame, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, Alabama, Miami and Auburn are among the other school battling for the 6-foot-6, 272-pound Petit-Frere.

Michael Barrett: Michigan hosted Barrett, a quarterback / athlete at Valdosta (Ga.) Lowndes, for an official visit in December. He will visit Georgia Tech officially Jan. 12-14. The Yellowjackets are giving him an opportunity to play quarterback. Nebraska also recently offered and may receive one of his final official visits.

Jarrett Patterson: Patterson, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound offensive tackle from Mission Viejo (Calif.), told 247Sports’ Greg Biggins that he is down to UCLA and Michigan and will host both schools for in-home visits before making a decision the third week of January.

Tyler Friday: Many analysts are projecting Michigan to land the Ramsey (N.J.) Don Bosco Prep defensive tackle, but Ohio State continues to make this anything but a lock. Recent interest from Penn State could result in Friday visiting the Nittany Lions before making a decision, as well.

Vincent Gray: The last remaining in-state target for this cycle, Gray, a defensive back prospect from Rochester Adams, is slated to take an official visit to Michigan this weekend. West Virginia was the favorite prior to Michigan’s offer, and California and Duke have offered since the Wolverines extended one just before Christmas. Still, Gray has no other visits planned as of right now.

Others: Michigan continues to recruit Metairie (La.) Archbishop Rummel’s highly-touted wide receiver JaMarr Chase, but LSU is now the school many project to land him. The Wolverines will look to San Marcos (Calif.) Mission Hills’ Chris Olave as another receiver target. He was supposed to have visited Michigan already, but had to cancel due to a family emergency. Olave rescheduling would go a long way in the Wolverines’ chances.

Michigan appears to be a longshot with offensive tackle Jalen Goss, Barrett’s teammate, who now is reportedly favoring Auburn, as well as five-star athlete / safety Talanoa Hufanga, who took an official visit to Michigan, but is leaning towards staying out west.

Then there is Otis Reese, who is the most questionable of the three commits who did not sign. Georgia is the primary threat to Michigan, but there is some question as to whether or not the Bulldogs have much room left in their top-ranked class.

They received a commitment from four-star linebacker Channing Tindall, and are in contention to flip in-state prospect Quay Walker, who is currently committed to Alabama. If Walker does indeed flip to the Bulldogs, that may close the curtain on their linebacker class.
