MSU fan John Smoltz on rivalry: 'Your whole year can be made'

The Detroit News
Hall-of-Fame pitcher John Smoltz, a Michigan State fan, is excited for this week's rivalry game.

He won't admit it, but John Smoltz probably doesn't want the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers NL Championship Series to go to a Game 7.

Smoltz, the Fox analyst, will have other things on his mind Saturday — most notably the Michigan-Michigan State football game.

Smoltz, a Lansing native and avid Spartans fan, talked about the rivalry during a pregame video posted to Twitter by Fox, before Game 5 of the NLCS in L.A.

"It was all about that game," said Smoltz, 51, a Lansing Waverly alum who went on to a Hall-of-Fame pitching career with the Atlanta Braves. "It was all about that game. Certainly, your year can be made if you can't go on and do anything else.

"That game meant that you won the year if your team won.

"I've had many rivalries within my family talking about Michigan and Michigan State, so I bleed green, they bleed maize and blue, and we see who wins each and every year."

The rivalry game will be at noon on Fox on Saturday.

Fox also released its neat 30-second hype video, focusing on the infamous "Little Brother" comment made by Michigan running back Mike Hart in 2007.
