The recruitment of Brooklyn (N.Y.) Christ the King Regional senior defensive tackle Jared Harrison-Hunte is a crowded one, but it also a long way from finished, and Michigan State is pushing to be a contender in the race.

The Spartans offered in early November and now are looking to get an official visit from Harrison-Hunte. Ohio State, Penn State and Arizona State, which he just took an official visit to, are just a few of the other programs involved.

It has all come quickly for Harrison-Hunte.

As a freshman, he was a bouncy 6-foot-4, 200-pound swingman averaging 11 points per game on the basketball court. As a sophomore, he was outstanding again in hoops for a team that made it to the state semi-finals. But nature began to take over and that 200 pounds was now into the 250s, and seeing that he might have the talent to take football farther than basketball, he put on shoulder pads and tried the sport for the first time in his life.

Today, Harrison-Hunte is 285 pounds, still athletic enough to play on his school’s basketball team, but now holding major scholarship offers in football.

According to 247Sports’ Brian Dohn, Harrison-Hunte will take an official visit to Ohio state on Nov. 24, then head to presumed favorite Penn State on Dec. 7, and then to Tennessee on Dec. 14.

Dohn said a Michigan State official could come in January.

“He really likes (defensive tackles) coach (Ron) Burton at Michigan State. They have been showing a lot of interest lately,” Christ the King assistant coach Bruce Eugene said.

That visit would change Harrison-Hunte’s original plan of announcing a commitment and signing during the early signing period in December.

He now is likely to wait until the traditional Feb. 6 date.

Michigan State has two defensive linemen committed in their 2019 class — Michael Fletcher and Adam Berghorst — but as both are ends. The Spartans still have room for an interior lineman.

Harrison-Hunte is ranked as the No. 5 senior in the state of New York by 247Sports.

Christ the King junior RB offered

In addition to Harrison-Hunte, Michigan State also offered his junior teammate Tirek Murphy, a four-star running back.

Murphy has a combination of size (6-1, 205 pounds) and burst that has enabled him to earn offers from Arizona State, Boston College, Duke, Louisville, Michigan, Purdue, Rutgers, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and others.

He has visited several schools on his offer list, but has not been to East Lansing yet.

2020 offer in Virginia

Michigan State  recently offered Highland Springs (Va.) cornerback Malcolm Greene.

Greene (5-10, 177 pounds) has 19 offers on his list, including Clemson, Duke and Florida.

Highland Springs is the same high school the Spartans from which the signed receiver Felton Davis. They also recruited wide receiver Ali Jennings in the 2019 class.
