Game summary

It's back to the drawing board for the Michigan State's coaching staff.

The offense under new coordinator Brad Salem out-gained Arizona State 404 yards to 216, but a too-many-men-on-the-field penalty on Matt Coghlin's game-tying field goal with 6 seconds remaining resulted in the Spartans falling to Arizona State at home, 10-7. Coghlin missed all three field-goal attempts on the afternoon.

Spartans have too many men on field, erase game-tying field goal

Michigan State takes over at the 25 with no timeouts and 50 seconds left.

Brian Lewerke rushes for 11 yards on first down, reaching the Michigan State 36.

Lewerke's first-down throw to Darrell Stewart is incomplete. His pass on second down to Matt Dotson is also incomplete. 30 seconds left. The Spartans pick up a first down by way of a pass interference penalty that'll put the Spartans at Arizona State's 49.

Darrell Stewart comes up with a huge 25-yard reception that'll move Michigan State into field goal range.

Matt Coghlin ties things up with a 42-yard field goal, but the Spartans had 12 men on the field. That's a 5-yard penalty and they'll replay fourth down.

Coghlin misses the 47-yarder. Spartans lose.

Jayden Daniels completes a 5-yard pass to Kyle Williams on first down and hits Eno Benjamin for 5 more yards on second down to move the chains.

The Sun Devils are moving now. Daniels hits a wide-open Brandon Aiyuk on first down for a 40-yard gain that'll put Arizona State at the Spartan 25.

Aiyuk catches a 2-yard pass on the next play. Daniels is forced by Kenny Willekes to make an errant pass that falls incomplete.

Elijah Collins rushes for 1 yard on first down and 2 yards on second down. Cody White appeared to have reached the line to gain on third down, but the catch is called back for offensive pass interference. It'll be third-and-14. Darrell Stewart comes up big again, hauling in a 16-yard pass on third down. Or, at least that's what it appeared. 

The play is reviewed and ruled an incompletion. Michigan State will be forced to punt.

Michigan State gets huge fourth-quarter stop

Arizona State takes over at the 35 thanks to a 20-yard return by Frank Darby.

Kenny Willekes forces a fumble, recovered by the Spartans, on first down, but a personal foul penalty on Raequan Williams will give Arizona State a new set of downs at midfield.

Jayden Daniels is sacked for a loss of 2 and Eno Benjamin is dropped for a 4-yard loss on first and second down, respectively. Benjamin rushes for 5 yards on third down. 

Cody White calls for a fair catch at the Michigan State 10.

Collins touchdown gives Spartans first lead of game

Elijah Collins rushes for 2 yards on first down. Brian Lewerke hits Julian Barnett for a 29-yard pickup on second down, reaching the Arizona State 39 on the play. 

A false start penalty makes it first-and-15 for Michigan State from the Arizona State 44.

La'Darius Jefferson drops a first-down pass. Lewerke's throw to Cody White on second down is good for 6 yards. Darrell Stewart picks up the first down with an 11-yard reception.

Connor Heyward steams ahead to the Arizona State 21 with a first-down reception of 6 yards. It'll be third-and-2 after a 2-yard run by Lewerke. White picks up a first down for the Spartans with a tough 5-yard catch. They have it at the 14.

Collins picks up 5 yards on first down, and the freshman gives Michigan State its first points of the game, plus a lead, with a 9-yard touchdown run.

Arizona State catches a holding penalty on first down. It'll now be first-and-19 from the 10. Benjamin rushes for a yard and is then stopped for no gain on second down.

Elijah Collins barely makes it out of the end zone on first down, losing 3 yards on the play. It'll be second-and-13 from the 1. Brian Lewerke gives the Spartans some breathing room with a 2-yard pitch and catch to Matt Seybert. Next it's Darrell Stewart making a play, hauling in a 20-yard pass from Lewerke to move the sticks.

Another chunk play for Michigan State, this time by way of a 20-yard completion to Dotson. It's first down Spartans at the 43.

Anthony Williams rushes for 5 yards on first down and 4 on second down to make it third-and-1 from the Arizona State 48. La'Darius Jefferson picks up a yard, his first carry of the day, to keep the chains moving.

Lewerke gains a yard with his feet on the next play. Collins rushes for 5 on second down. Lewerke's shovel pass to Stewart on third down is complete, but goes for a loss of 2. It'll be fourth-and-6.

Jake Hartbarger's punt is fair caught at the 8.

Lewerke is sacked for a 4-yard loss on first down.

Injury alert: Michigan State OL Luke Campbell was hurt on the play and is being attended to by the training staff.

Lewerke's next attempt to Stewart is rushed and misses the mark. He hits Cody White for a 13-yard gain on third down, though, and that'll make it fourth-and-1 at the Arizona State 34. Connor Heyward is stopped for no gain on fourth down.
