Game summary

Michigan State had the last laugh in a tight back-and-forth contest on Saturday at Spartan Stadium, using a chip-shot field goal by Matt Coghlin just before time expired to skate past Indiana, 40-31.

Michigan State's offense racked up 442 yards and 300 through the air. Indiana's offense gave Michigan State a tough time, as freshman quarterback Michael Penix Jr. finished 33-for-42 passing for 286 yards and three touchdowns.

Cody White straight up drops a pass that probably would have picked up at least 15-20 yards. Lewerke rushes for 2 yards on second down. A defensive holding penalty on third down gives Michigan State a new set of downs at the Indiana 44.

Collins rushes for no gain on first down. Lewerke again tucks it on second down, cutting through defenders until going down at the 30 for a gain of 14.

Stevie Scott III goes for a gain of 2 on first down. Michael Penix Jr. goes deep to Whop Philyor on second down; a perfect throw would have likely meant a touchdown, but it's just beyond Philyor's reach. Penix is sacked for a loss of 6 on third down.

Brandon Soward's returns the punt to Indiana's 29.

Michigan State goes three-and-out after Indiana touchdown

Indiana's kick goes for a touchback.

Cody White makes a terrific catch near the right sideline for a gain of 13, but it's reviewed to see whether White got his foot down, which they say he did not. It's second-and-10. Brian Lewerke's second-down throw is rushed and falls incomplete. He tries to fit it into an extremely tight window on third down, another incompletion.

Whop Philyor returns Jake Hartbarger's punt near the Michigan State 30. A penalty will start Indiana at its own 11.

Indiana takes 24-21 lead to start fourth

Indiana starts at the 20.

Stevie Scott III is tripped up after a gain of 12, which would have gone for a lot more, perhaps 80 in total, if not for a great play by Xavier Henderson.

Nick Westbrook is upended for a 3-yard gain after catching a pass to Michael Penix Jr.'s right. Whop Philyor takes an end-around and gets 6 yards before getting drilled by Kenny Willekes. Scott reaches the 47-yard-line with a 6-yard run to move the chains.

Donavan Hale catches a pass while going out of bounds at the Michigan State 35 for an 18-yard gain.

Ronnie Walker Jr. is stopped for a 1-yard gain on first down. The Hoosiers pick up a first down with a 12-yard completion to Philyor.

David Ellis gets 7 yards on a first-down reception. Scott is stopped for no gain on second down. Scott gets the toss on third down, goes left, and just barely reaches the marker to make it first-and-10 at the 13.

Penix completes a pass to Ty Fryfogle that's good for a yard. That's 20 consecutive completions for Penix.

Darrell Stewart's 22-yard return puts Michigan State at the 28 to start its next drive.

Elijah Collins gets to the right edge for a 19-yard pickup on Michigan State's first play of the half.

They go back to Collins on the next play for a gain of 3 and again on second down for a pickup of 4. Brian Lewerke's throw to Cody White on third down falls incomplete, but would have been negated for an illegal motion penalty, anyway.

Scott then pushes forward up the middle for a gain of 6 on the next play. Michael Penix Jr. hits Scott on a screen pass that winds up going for 13 and a first down.

Philyor cuts through the Michigan State defense for an 11-yard pickup, then catches another pass and shakes some more tacklers for a 25-yard gain. Indiana has it first-and-10 at the 23.

Penix hits Nick Westbrook for a quick, 5-yard gain. Then he throws complete to Ty Fryfogle for a gain of 8 yards that'll make it first-and-goal at the 10.

Scott goes for a gain of 3 on first down but loses a yard on second down.

Michigan State comes up empty on drive late in half

Darrell Stewart steps out of bounds at the 30 on the kickoff. 

Laress Nelson and Brian Lewerke get a little mixed up on first down, leading to an incompletion. Elijah Collins is stuffed while trying to cut back to the middle for a gain of 2. Lewerke escapes from a closing pocket and gets a yard beyond the line to gain at the 41.

Collins is dropped for a loss of 4 on first down. Lewerke's throws to Collins on first down and Stewart on third down fall incomplete.

A 10-yard return on Jake Hartbarger's punt puts Indiana at the 13.

It's now first-and-goal at the 1. Sampson James is stopped for no gain on first down. Penix keeps, rolls left, and reaches the pylon for an Indiana touchdown.

Antjuan Simmons already has his second tackle-for-loss, drilling Scott in the backfield for a 2-yard loss. Penix is hit by Kenny Willekes as he throws, forcing an incompletion. He'll have Whop Philyor wide-open in the end zone on third down, though, and the Hoosiers have pulled even late in the first.

Collins is dropped in the backfield by Micah McFadden for a gain of 3. Cody White nearly makes a circus catch on a prayer from Lewerke, but the ball is jarred loose as he goes to the ground. Lewerke throws complete to Trent Gillison on third down, but Gillison is short of the line to gain. Lewerke rushes to the line and keeps the chains moving with a 4-yard quarterback sneak.

Collins is dropped for no gain on first down. Lewerke's second-down throw should have been picked off and taken the other way for a score, but Bryant Fitzgerald can't reel it in. Lucky break for the Spartans. Lewerke is hit while letting go of a pass on third down, an incompletion.

Matt Coghlin's 43-yard field goal attempt is no good.
