Bloomington, Ind. — Michigan State will be without defensive tackle Malik McDowell for the first half next week when it hosts BYU.

Malik McDowell gets ejected for targeting against Indiana.

The junior was called for targeting in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 24-21 overtime loss to Indiana. The call was reviewed and while it was not confirmed, the call was allowed to stand. That meant McDowell was ejected and must sit the first half next week.

“I didn’t see the call on Malik,” Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said. “But I heard from our assistant coaches and … I can’t really comment on that. I know that it was in question. That’s all I can say.”

McDowell wasn’t available after the game, but the preseason All-American shared at least one opinion on Twitter.
“I'm too ruff for football,” he posted.

McDowell, who has faced constant double teams this season, had five tackles on Saturday, including a half tackle for loss.
