Michigan State is ranked No. 12 in the Associated Press college basketball preseason poll, which was released Monday.

Michigan is not ranked.

The top five teams are Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Villanova and Oregon.

The Spartans are the third-highest ranked Big Ten team, after No. 9 Wisconsin and No. 11 Indiana.

The Spartans defeated Northwood in an exhibition game last week and open the regular season Wednesday at 7 p.m. at home against Saginaw Valley State.

MSU will play Duke, Kentucky and No. 10 Arizona in November, and could face No. 13 Louisville in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament.

In the Big Ten schedule, MSU plays Wisconsin once (at home), Indiana once (on road), No. 15 Purdue twice and No. 25 Maryland once (on road).

The Blue Devils, who return three starters from last season’s team and have what is considered one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, received 58 of the 65 first-place votes from the national media panel.

Kentucky had two No. 1 votes, defending national champion Villanova had four and Oregon had one.
