Former MSU All-American Don Coleman dead

Former Michigan State All-American offensive lineman Don Coleman, a member of the 1951 national championship team, died on Monday, the school announced. He was 88.

During his three-year career, Coleman helped guide the Spartans to a 23-4 record, including 15 of the program-record 28 straight wins.

As a senior, Coleman became Michigan State's first unanimous All-American in 1951 and later became the first Spartan to have his jersey retired. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1975 and is also a member of the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.

Prior to Michigan State, Coleman didn't play football until his senior year at Flint Central High, where he starred and won the state championship.

Coleman was drafted in the eighth round of the 1952 NFL draft by the Chicago Cardinals but opted to join the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant before starting a career in education.
