East Lansing – Michigan State will open the 2018 season by hosting Utah State, finalizing its schedule for that season.

The Spartans will take on the team from the Mountain West on Sept. 1, 2018, according to FBSchedules.com, which obtained a copy of the contract that will guarantee Utah State $1.4 million.

Michigan State travels to Arizona State the next week for a game on Sept. 8 and has a bye week before beginning Big Ten play against Indiana. The final nonconference game comes a week later at home against Central Michigan.

What to watch in Michigan State spring game

As for 2017, the Spartans did some rearranging last December to avoid a bye to begin the season. Athletic director Mark Hollis was able to move the Bowling Green game at home to Sept. 2 followed by a home game against Western Michigan on Sept. 9. The bye comes in week three before hosting Notre Dame on Sept. 23. Big Ten play starts Sept. 30 at home against Iowa.
