MSU's Bridges named to Naismith Trophy top 30 list
East Lansing — Miles Bridges came back to Michigan State for his sophomore season to win a national championship.
That’s still to be determined as No. 2 Michigan State prepares for the final three games of the regular season. It heads to Northwestern on Saturday before closing out at home Tuesday against Illinois then next Sunday at Wisconsin.
So, while the postseason is still to come, Bridges has been busy. He produced a signature moment of the season last weekend when his 3-pointer in the final seconds beat Purdue, and he’s adding his name to several lists for several individual awards.
On Thursday, Bridges was one of 30 players named to the late season team for the 50th Citizen Naismith Trophy, selected by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Ten semifinalists will be revealed on Feb. 28, and only those 10 players are eligible for the group of four finalists, which will be released in mid-March. Fans will be able to vote for their favorite player by visiting naismithtrophy.com/vote between March 19-30 to cast their ballot, and the fan component counts for five percent of the overall final vote. The 50th Citizen Naismith Trophy will be awarded on April 1 in San Antonio, during the NCAA Men’s Final Four.
Last week, Bridges was named to the John R. Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. He is also one of 10 finalists for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award and was one of 14 players selected to the midseason watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which is presented by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association to college basketball’s national player of the year.
Bridges, who was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday for the second time this season, leads the Spartans in scoring at 17.3 points a game. He’s also averaging seven rebounds and 2.9 assists a game.
