Bob Wojnowski, Angelique S. Chengelis and Matt Charboneau preview Week 2 games: Michigan vs. Western Michigan and Michigan State vs. Arizona State. The Detroit News
Matt Charboneau, Angelique S. Chengelis, John Niyo and Bob Wojnowski pick the outcome of Saturday's Michigan State-Arizona State game at Sun Devil's Stadium (10:45 p.m. ESPN/WJR).
Matt Charboneau: There’s a lot of reasons to think Michigan State will have a hard time when it heads West to take on Arizona State, the time change and temperatures near 100 degrees among them. But the Sun Devils have an explosive offense that has the Spartans’ attention, as well. But MSU’s offense isn’t bad, either, and expect the Spartans to run the ball better than in week one. Michigan State, 34-24
Angelique S. Chengelis: The Spartans will have to contend with Arizona State airing it out and also steamy temperatures and while those will be challenges, MSU will be able to handle them. They had a lot to learn from the opening season win and the Spartans will be sharper in every phase. Michigan State, 28-14
John Niyo: If they can stand the heat, the Spartans should escape. But only if Brian Lewerke keeps his cool under pressure in an emotional homecoming game and that MSU secondary doesn't get burned deep too often. Michigan State, 31-27
Bob Wojnowski: The Spartans eventually handled the heat last week, but this is real desert heat. Arizona State was supposed to be in the middle of the Pac-12, but Herm Edwards’ crew might have more firepower than expected. A senior quarterback, Manny Wilkins, and a star receiver, N’Keal Harry, can be a lethal combination. Michigan State’s opening scare gives you pause, but I suspect Brian Lewerke will pop big plays on a suspect defense. Michigan State, 37-30
