Detroit News predictions: Michigan vs. Appalachian State

The Detroit News

Angelique S. Chengelis:

There have been a few trips down memory lane this week with Appalachian State coming to town for the first time since pulling off the unthinkable upset in 2007. The current Michigan players, however, are the first to tell you they weren’t there, they were too young to remember it, and don’t care to discuss a game that happened seven years ago. This Appalachian State team is very different than that championship team and won’t pose a similar threat. Michigan will try to establish the run behind an offensive line that needs to find its way early this season. The Michigan defense will be too much.

Michigan 24-3

■Matt Charboneau:

There’s already been plenty of talk about the last time Appalachian State came to Ann Arbor, but this team is only similar in name. An inexperienced team that was 4-8 last season likely doesn’t have the playmakers to pull off another upset, or even keep it close, for that matter.

Michigan 45-10

■Bob Wojnowski:

Appalachian State may send shivers down spines, but it isn’t as talented as it was on that fateful day seven years ago. And if ever Michigan should be emotionally prepared, this is it — as long as its offensive line is physically prepared.

Michigan 49-13

■John Niyo:

Time to find that running game, irretrievably lost behind Michigan’s offensive line last fall. Also time to see some consistent havoc created by the defensive line, particularly off the edge.

Michigan 34-14
