Dave Brandon's email to athletes announcing resignation

Former Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon reportedly sent an email to UM student-athletes last week, announcing his resignation.

A copy of the email was posted on Twitter on Monday by Alejandro Zuniga, co-managing sports editor for the Michigan Daily, the university's student newspaper.

In the email, Brandon writes that the "circumstances surrounding my decision to resign are complex and personal." He is not specific about those circumstances.

Brandon indicates that he will remain in the Ann Arbor area, and looks forward to following Michigan athletics.

President Schlissel will soon be announcing that I have made the decision to resign as Director of Athletics, effective immediately.

Almost five years ago today, I agreed to take on this challenging role and since that time, I have been committed to creating the very best experiences possible for you, our coaches, department team members, fans, donors, and students. Together we have accomplished many great things – and we have much to be proud of!

The circumstances surrounding my decision to resign are complex and personal. Suffice to say it was a very difficult decision for me and my family. I love Michigan Athletics and the role it plays as a part of our great university. I love being reminded of my own time as a student-athlete and the power that sport plays in each of your lives. I have been inspired at the qualities that make up a Michigan student-athlete, there is no doubt in mind you will be the next generation of leaders in whatever you choose. I will miss watching freshmen grow to be seniors, our end of the year banquets, cheering from the stands, our graduation celebrations … and both the thrill of great victories and the way we pick ourselves up with even more resolve after tough losses. I will miss it all!

Jan and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to get to know so many of you and share experiences that have created life-long memories. We plan to stay in the Ann Arbor area, so we will be sure to follow each and every one of your successes. We will continue to be your biggest cheerleaders!

Enjoy every moment of this incredible journey you are on and I look forward to celebrating all of the championships and accomplishments that are in your future.

Go Blue … Always!
