Madej's grandkid starts life with a trophy-worthy name
How fitting that during the week of The Game, Michigan-Ohio State, Bruce Madej, Michigan's longest-serving sports information director, has a new grandson whose name is a tribute to the Wolverines' two modern-day Heisman Trophy winners.
Desmond Charles Madej was born Wednesday morning at Hutzel Hospital to parents, Mike and Libby, who also have a son, Eli. Mike is Madej's oldest of three sons.
"It absolutely shocked me," Bruce Madej, recently retired from U-M after 34 years, said of the name. "I could not believe it."
Of course Desmond Howard, the former Michigan receiver, won the Heisman Trophy in 1991, while Charles Woodson, who helped lead the Wolverines to an unbeaten season and national championship, won in 1997.
