Florida senior pitcher Lauren Haeger was named the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year on Tuesday night, beating out finalists Sierra Romero of Michigan and Cheridan Hawkins of Oregon.
"I was shocked, honestly," Haeger said. "I didn't expect it at all. I think it could've gone to any one of us, and it would've been a great reward for anybody. ... It blows my mind."
The 2015 Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Year is among the national leaders this season in ERA (1.24, sixth), wins (28, 13th) and shutouts (11, fourth).
She is also Florida's all-time leader in home runs with 68.
Romero, who leads Michigan into the Women's College World Series to face Alabama on Thursday, is hitting .472 (seventh in the nation) with 21 home runs and 80 RBIs (tied, fourth). Her .624 on-base percentage is second in the nation.
